Help me bring epilepsy out of the shadows!
Story
There is an urgent need to expand the services available to the growing number of people affected by epilepsy in Australia. The money I raise when I trek the Great Wall of China will help Epilepsy Action Australia reach more Australians and raise the awareness and understanding of epilepsy in the community.
Epilepsy is not simply a one-off diagnosis; it can severely disable people in terms of their capacity to live meaningful, independent lives. Loss of a driver’s license, unemployment and discrimination can impact profoundly on self-esteem and independence. There is also the debilitating impact of having seizures and the physical toll this has on the person with epilepsy, particularly given the recovery period required to resume normal activities after a seizure is experienced.
For people living in rural and remote Australia, distance makes it harder to access services and medical specialists, as most services are based in metropolitan areas. There are many reports of long waiting lists.
We’re striving to build services around health education and intervention to make it easier for people with epilepsy to manage their condition. The money you raise will help us acquire the equipment and tools needed to provide comprehensive education and support services across Australia.
New technologies will help Epilepsy Action Australia reach people online. Enhanced videoconferencing will break down the barriers that prevent thousands of people accessing adequate
services. E-Learning programs will make it easier for individuals and groups in the community to learn more about epilepsy andseizure management. In fact, better equipment and the National
Broadband Network will allow us to set up virtual classrooms to conduct high-level training and education about epilepsy.
With your help, Epilepsy Action Australia can reach out and make sure people with epilepsy have the support they need – no matter where they live.
